April in the garden πŸ’, unmistakable sign of spring 🌻, avoid costly mistakes, & more 😎🌡

Hi, Desert Gardener,

It will soon be April, a uniquely beautiful month in the desert. It's also one of the busiest months for gardeners. Find out what you should do in your garden this month in April's Gardening Guide.

🌡 β˜€οΈ 🌡

I realized after I sent last week's newsletter that I didn't mention it was officially spring. Normally, that's an important gardening milestone but it slipped my mind. I thought we skipped spring and went straight to summer. πŸ˜–

My garden is currently a mixed bag. I've got plants that didn't freeze that have never looked better. And I've got a few "bulletproof" plants that are a little fried. How about you? How's your garden doing?

🌡 β˜€οΈ 🌡

In this week's newsletter, we cover:

  • What to do in the garden in April
  • Featured plant: Blue palo verde
  • What to do before making any major plant purchase
  • Weed or wildflower?
  • and more!

Palo Verde Fun Fact!

Palo verde is Arizona’s official state tree. But since the legislators were not botanists, they failed to designate which palo verde. Consequently, both blue palo verde and foothills palo verde are considered "the state tree".

Blue Palo Verde: Unmistakable Sign of Spring

Blue palo verde is a fast-growing, drought-tolerant tree with green bark. You know that spring has arrived when these trees put on their display of sunny yellow flowers. Here’s everything you need to know about growing this Sonoran Desert native.

Upcoming Tucson Events

A note to my Tucson gardeners: As SWG gardener's outreach has expanded, the majority of my readers now live outside of Tucson. (No one is more surprised than me!) Consequently, I've decided to put less emphasis on Tucson events. I will still highlight upcoming events here, but an "Event Guide", which lists the sources of events, will be replacing the "Events Calendar".
* Easy Care Designs for Summer Pots @ Tucson Botanical Garden
* Cholla Bud Harvest @ Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
* Tombstone Annual Rose Festival @ Rose Tree Museum

Check on the details and find more events in the Tucson Gardening Event Guide β†’

Not in Tucson? Look for online classes. Anyone can participate in these.

Weed or Wildflower?

If you see a seedling with skinny, slightly fuzzy, dark green leaves, it's a blackfoot daisy. This Arizona native perennial ground cover is smothered in adorable, white, daisy-like flowers much of the year.
