How to find desert plant bargains๐Ÿ’ฒ, colorful "Easter egg" plant ๐Ÿชบ, & more ๐Ÿ˜Ž๐ŸŒต

Hi, Desert Gardener,

I always try to tie the plants and posts I feature here in with what is currently happening in gardens, such as plants that are in bloom or causing problems, or topics that are on gardeners' minds. But last week I missed a perfect opportunity to mention Easter egg emu! So I'm doing it now, a week late.

๐Ÿฐ ๐Ÿชบ ๐Ÿฐ

The fascinating thing about Easter egg emu is that it has multiple flower colors at the same time. You might be wondering...

How does it do that?

The first time I saw one I thought it might be a man-made cultivar, but it's not. The answer is deceptively simple.

Each flower starts out as a yellow bud that successively turns orange, then pink, and finally purple-pink. Because each flower blooms on its own schedule, youโ€™ll see flowers at all stages at once. The effect is amazing!
