March !🦁, hi-viz plant 🐹, stinknet ⚠️, what to plant now, (& what to plant later) 🌡🌴

Hi, Desert Gardener,

Excuse my being trite, but it looks like March is living up to its reputation of coming in like a lion. Today's blustery weather reminds me that 2 years ago, I had 5" of snow in my garden the first week in March! (It flattened most of my shrubs some are still growing wonky. πŸ₯Ί)

Every year about this time I see the same question -- "What is that plant with the glowing yellow-green flowers?" So I thought I'd answer that question pre-emptively with this week's featured plant.

In this week's newsletter, we cover:

  • Featured Plant: Gopher Plant 🐹
  • What to plant in spring -- month-by-month
  • The obnoxious weed everyone must know about ⚠️
  • What to do in the garden in March πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ
  • Upcoming gardening event highlights (Plant Sales!)
  • and more!

Featured Plant:
Gopher Plant

Gopher plant is a stunning ground cover that’s native to dry parts of the Mediterranean. Every spring, its whorls of green-gray leaves are topped with brilliant chartreuse flowers. When in bloom, these high-viz flowers are show-stoppers!

Spring Clean-Up Tip! Check for Nests

While you are doing your spring clean-up, be sure to check for bird nests before you prune trees, shrubs, or other large plants. πŸͺΊ

What to Plant in Spring (Month by Month)

Stop Stinknet

Stinknet is bad news even in its native South African habitat. Here it's an alarmingly aggressive, invasive plant that threatens desert biodiversity, contributes to wildfires, and emits toxic gases when burned. Every gardener should know how to ID it, what to do if you find any, and how to get rid of it safely. Watch this video or learn more at Stinknet.org →
