Fishhook Barrel Cactus: Monsoon Bloomer
With its fishhook spines and barrel shape, this desert native lives up to its name. It's rather nondescript until it blooms during the monsoon. Then it adds a surprising touch of vivid color when many other desert plants are taking a break from flowering.

Fishhook barrel cactus is also called "compass cactus". That's because it almost always leans to the south/southwest. So in a pinch it can act like a compass to help you find your way if you get lost in the desert! ๐งญ
