Throw your succulents some shade 🌡😎, desert plant immortalized in art πŸŽ¨πŸ–ŒοΈ, & more

Hi, Desert Gardener!

Today's featured plant, sacred datura, is a desert native that was traditionally used to treat wounds and snake and insect bites. But its main use was as a mind-altering substance. It was used in religious ceremonies and in rites of passage by shaman to transcend reality and enter other worlds. It is still used recreationally. (This is not recommended since it has a long list of side effects.)

I'm not even going to talk about the heat... πŸ₯΅

What you'll find in this week's newsletter:

  • Featured Plant: Sacred datura
  • Why succulents appreciate some shade
  • Holy lantana!
  • What to do in the garden in August
  • Upcoming gardening classes & events
  • and more!

Sacred Datura: Evening Delight

Large, fragrant, white flowers make this native wildflower pop in the evening when its flowers open. They attract moths that look like hummingbirds! But this plant has a another side you should know about before growing it.

Fun Fact!

Sacred datura was a favorite subject of the renowned painter Georgia O’Keeffe. One of her datura paintings sold at auction for $44 million, which set a world record for the most expensive painting created by a female artist.

Why Desert Succulents Appreciate Some Shade

Assuming that cactus, agave, and aloes love full sun is a common gardening mistake. Here’s why full sun can be hard on even the toughest sun-loving plants, and what to do if any of your succulents show signs of sun scald.

A Reader Asks:

"Something is making small holes in my lantanas. Should I spray it or leave it alone?"

The holes are probably caused by grasshoppers. But you don't need to take action for several reasons:
* Lantanas are tough and whatever is nibbling on your plants almost certainly will not cause any real harm.
* Spraying any plant with anything (natural or chemical) in this heat risks burning the leaves. The rule of thumb is to avoid spraying plants when the temperature is above 90.
* Oddly, as tough as lantana is, spraying it with insecticidal soap or any DIY "soap" remedy can kill it.

August: What to Do in the Garden This Month

August is a somewhat busier month in the garden than July. There are more plants to be pruned and fertilized, and more pests and problems to watch out for, too.
