Here in Tucson, September is closing out with rain and cooler temperatures. What a treat! I hope you've experienced some relief, too.

October is right around the corner, so get ready... this is the month we've all been waiting for! It’s prime time for planting most (but not all) desert landscape plants. Ornamental grasses, especially natives species, are vastly underused in desert gardens. They have a cooling effect and soften the harshness of rocks and spiky plants. Today's featured plant is one of my favorite but little-known ornamental grasses.

I'm bored with growing mums in containers for fall. Are there any other flowers I could grow instead?

Yes! Many flowers that grow in summer in temperate climates do great here fall through winter such as alyssum, petunias, snapdragons, and geraniums. For some inspiring combos, check out Summer Wind Nursery's 4 recipes for fall flower containers.

Deer Grass: Outstanding Native Ornamental

This southwest native is widely considered the region’s most spectacular ornamental grass. It's a boon to wildlife and can survive on as little as 4β€³ of annual rainfall. Other than one annual pruning, it's nearly maintenance free.
