Ornamental grasses, especially natives species, are vastly underused in desert gardens. They have a cooling effect and soften the harshness of rocks and spiky plants. Today's featured plant is one of my favorite but little-known ornamental grasses.

Deer Grass: Outstanding Native Ornamental
This southwest native is widely considered the regionβs most spectacular ornamental grass. It's a boon to wildlife and can survive on as little as 4β³ of annual rainfall. Other than one annual pruning, it's nearly maintenance free.
