What to do in the garden in May πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ, javelina-proof plants πŸ— , harvesting seeds 🌻 , & more

Hi, Desert Gardener!

Happy May! It's a new month and things are changing fast in desert gardens, so be sure to check out May: What To Do in the Garden This Month. While there are still plenty of gardening activities to be done in May, there are some tasks that you should skip β€” they are best done in cooler weather. It's time to wrap up planting most plants. (The list of plants that like to be planted in May is a small one.)

I'm excited about a Four Arrows Garden Center event next Saturday (May 10). Noelle Johnson, aka Arizona Plant Lady, will be there to meet, greet, and sign copies of her books. She has been a gardening inspiration to me. I've been eagerly following her emails for nearly 15(!) years.

In this week's newsletter, we cover:

  • Featured Plant: Globe Mallow
  • Javelina Resistant Plant List πŸ—
  • Harvesting wildflower seeds
  • What to do in the garden in May πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ
  • Upcoming gardening classes & events
  • and more!

Wildflower Tip!

Some wildflowers such as desert bluebells, penstemon, and native poppies may have finished flowering. If you have any growing on your property, harvest seeds soon to sow next fall. Always let seeds completely dry on the plant to assure viability. Learn more about growing wildflowers here →

Featured Plant:
Globe Mallow

Globe mallow is a super-resilient native shrub that typically has orange flowers (but also comes in a rainbow assortment). This time of year, you might see them growing along roadsides and in median strips. These plants are so hardy, they're sometimes used to revegetate abandoned mines!

Featured Resource: Javelina Resistant Plant List

Javelinas will eat almost any plant if they are hungry (or thirsty) enough. Their favorite food is prickly pear cactus which, unbelievably, they eat thorns and all! 😲 Here are over 80 plants that are considered to largely be β€œjavelina resistant.”
