What to do in the garden in May πŸ‘©πŸ»β€πŸŒΎ, plant that looks like snow ❄️, feeding palms 🌴, and more 😎🌡

Hi, Desert Gardener,

Happy May! It's a new month and things are changing fast in desert gardens, so be sure to check out the May gardening guide. While there is still plenty to do in May, there are some activities that you should skip that are best done in cooler weather. It's time to wrap up planting most plants. (The list of plants that prefer to be planted in May is a small one.)

🌡 β˜€οΈ 🌡

Today's featured plant, myoporoum, is blooming now. I have a neighbor whose entire front yard is covered with it and it looks like it's covered with snow. Or hail. Depending on your perspective.

🌡 β˜€οΈ 🌡

Did you get any rain last night? I see on Rainlog.org that the lucky peeps south of Tucson got a decent amount of rain but most of us got nada. All I got was a lot of wind which doesn't help my plants or fill my rain barrel. 😒

In this week's newsletter, we cover:

  • What to do in the garden in May
  • Featured plant: Myoporum
  • Free wood chips!
  • Fertilizing palm trees
  • and more!

A Reader Asks

"I need a lot of wood chips either very cheap or free. Do you know of any sources?"

For free mulch, check out GetChipDrop.com. This site matches people who want free wood chip with arborists and tree companies who are trying to get rid of it. It's a win-win for homeowners and for tree trimming businesses!

Myoporum: Grass Green Ground Cover

This evergreen ground cover has small emerald green leaves, a color you don’t often see in the desert. Spring through summer it's blanketed with petite star-shaped flowers. One plant can easily grow 6 feet across.
